Cops prevent Tibetan’s immolation bid

A 26-year-old protester from Himachal Pradesh was detained and rushed to the hospital after an immolation bid outside the Chinese Embassy in central Delhi's Chanakyapuri area on Friday morning, police said.

A 26-year-old protester from Himachal Pradesh was detained and rushed to the hospital after an immolation bid outside the Chinese Embassy in central Delhi's Chanakyapuri area on Friday morning, police said.

KC Dwivedi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi) said Sonam Tsherab from Dharamsala had tried to immolate himself opposite the Chinese Embassy on Shanti Path at 11.30am.

The youth poured fuel on his body and set himself on fire before police overpowered him and put out the flames.

He suffered minor burn injuries on his legs, police said.

"He was rushed to the RML Hospital where he was admitted with 10% burns. He told us that he had come to Delhi alone from Dharamsala. He is stable and recuperating," said a senior police officer investigating the incident.
