Investigations into the shocking gangrape of the 23-year-old physiotherapist aboard a moving bus have revealed that two chance occurrences added to the intensity and brutality of the crime, sources said on Thursday.

The first was the geographical proximity of the random destination being touted by the six drunken occupants of the said bus to where the victim lived, while the other was an accidental meeting of the main accused with the seemingly amorphous Raju, one of the main accused who continues to evade arrest.

“According to the disclosure of Ram Singh, the main accused in the case whose lewd comments triggered the altercation between them and the victim's 28-year-old friend, him, Raju and Akshay are the only ones to have had played major parts in the crime,” said an officer investigating the case.

Police said Raju, whom they are trying to locate in Rajasthan but is suspected to be hiding in the NCR, had met 33-year-old Singh accidentally.

Sources said Singh has revealed that Raju was the first to brutally assault the victim’s 28-year-old friend, who had jumped to defend her.

“Egged on by Singh, who claims he got incensed when he was bitten by the girl when he was assaulting her friend and had started beating her mercilessly — especially on her face and private parts with his shoe, Raju was the third one to sexually assault her after him and Akshay Thakur,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, Singh has told the police that the couple victimised by them had not been selected in any way since southwest Delhi's Dwarka, as an intended destination, had been selected by the men on the bus randomly.

“Singh claims that they had done nothing to lure the couple onto the bus instead of offering to go to Noida and claiming that theirs was a chartered bus,” the officer said.

Even the two U-turns the bus took below the Mahipalpur flyover had been made in compulsion, Singh has told the investigators.

“During the first round of the flyover, the victim was being gangraped and a spot to dump the couple was being ascertained. The second time, the bus had taken the same route and pushed them out at the pre-decided spot,” added the officer.
