After reports of poorly lit stretches turning into breeding grounds for criminals, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said on Thursday that a third party will identify poorly lit stretches and find out whether the streetlights are adequate for the entire stretch.

“There has been no improvement as far as streetlights in the city are concerned. It is the responsibility of the power distribution companies to ensure the stretches are well lit. The maintenance continues to be poor despite the fact that they are using the latest technology to keep track of streetlights,” said Dikshit.

“We have decided to conduct a study to find out the gaps in the present system,” she added.

The chief minister said that another review of the streetlights will happen in February to assess the improvement.

Dikshit told the power distribution companies and the Delhi Transco Limited to anticipate future power demands following which tie-up for additional power supply can be done.

“The chief minister was unhappy over the series of outages during the extreme winter season even though the peak power demand was only 3,400 MW. This has exposed the claims of power distribution companies who have been claiming that they had done suitable tie-ups to procure additional power,” said a senior Delhi government official.
