Their 79-year-old mother, being a widow, will also get a pension of Rs 1,000 per month. "The family has been provided Rs 10,000 to meet urgent needs," a Delhi government spokesperson said. Both sisters Mamta, 40 and Nirja, 29, are still under treatment at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.

The starved sisters were rescued by their cousin. According to doctors at the hospital both the sisters are improving but are still in the ICU. "Mamta is asking me to take her home and has promised that she would now take care of herself. I really want my daughters to get normal," Nirmala Devi, Mamta's mother said.

The family blames it all on Mamta's husband who had deserted her soon after marriage, 10 years ago, which pushed her into depression. "Both the sisters were absolutely fine before that. Her husband was a drunkard and used to beat her. Seeing the condition of her sister, Nirja too went into depression and both stopped eating," Devi added.

Mamta's son, who also lived in the same house, now wants to study and leave his past behind. "I want to study like other children and secure a good future of my mother and grandmother. They have been through hell and I want happiness for them now," he said.

Apart from Delhi government, a few individuals have also offered help to the family. An HT reader has decided to sponsor the studies of the boy and has contacted the family for the same.
