So, between sporting activities, viewers will get a glimpse of how the congested, yet colourful Chandni Chowk looks. Or for that matter, the India Gate in silhouette with the sun setting behind it.

Ahead of the Games, Doordarshan—a constituent of Prasar Bharati, the official Host broadcaster for Games 2010—will install ‘Beauty Cameras’ at five locations—Qutub Minar, Jeevan Bharati (CP), Red Fort, India Gate and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (near Habitat Centre).

“These cameras will provide interesting inputs and add to the visual content generated through the Games. The commentary will weave in the local flavour,” says Leena Nandan, Project Director, Doordarshan.

Video feed from all these cameras will go to the international broadcast centre at Pragati Maidan where it will be customized for foreign viewers. Commentators will be briefed about the places that would be shown so that they can add value to the visuals.

For instance, when visuals of the busy Connaught Place are aired, the commentator will talk about CP’s history, how it came about in 1911 etc.

Production, coverage outsourced to a UK-based firm. More than 400 of DD’s men are being trained to use technology.
