Delhi: Man gets 10 years’ jail for rape on basis of DNA report

A Delhi court has sentenced a 22-year-old man, who had repeatedly raped a 20-year-old girl on the false promise of marrying her, to 10 years in jail.

The court relied on the DNA report of the complainant’s child, besides the testimony of the girl and other evidence produced before it while convicting Lalit Chauhan. It also slapped a fine of Rs 45,000 on him.

The court said the prosecution has established that Chauhan had repeatedly raped the victim from December 2011 to March 2012 on the promise of marrying her but refused to tie the knot.

“Admittedly, the fact regarding of having repeated sexual intercourse with the prosecutrix has not been disputed by the accused (Chauhan) nor the fact regarding her pregnancy consequent upon the act of having repeated sexual intercourse has been disputed by the accused, was fathered by accused has been disputed,” additional sessions judge MC Gupta said.

The woman had lodged a police complaint that she had met Chauhan in 2010 and they became friends. On December 25, 2011, they had gone to ‘purana qila’ where Chauhan mixed some intoxicant in her cold drink after which she fell unconscious, the police said, adding Chauhan first took her nude photographs and then raped her.
