Aiming at curbing crime by increasing community participation in policing, the Delhi Police on Tuesday initiated a project in which civilians will help patrolling a specific area.

The project 'Neighbourhood Police Team' was flagged off in two Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar to ensure security and safety in markets and residential complexes there.

Under this concept, beat-wise teams comprising "civil defence volunteers" will be constituted. Each such unit will be headed by a head constable and other constables as deputy heads, V Renganathan, ACP (West District) said.

Presently these civil defence staff will assist in morning patrolling from 4:00 am to 7:00 am but it may be changed in future as per crime pattern, he said.

However, they will not patrol alone. Each volunteer will carry a torch, a whistle and a baton during patrolling along with some other beat staff, the ACP said.

The official said a regular feedback will be taken and work of the civilians will be acknowledged with a certificate.
