Delhi Sikh Gurdwara panel remains adamant
A day after NDMC served a notice to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, preventing it from constructing any structure at Gurdwara Rakabganj, the committee on Wednesday said it would go ahead with its original plan of laying the foundation stone for a 1984 Sikh “genocide memorial”. A day after the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) served a notice to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), preventing it from constructing any structure at Gurdwara Rakabganj, the committee on Wednesday said it would go ahead with its original plan of laying the foundation stone for a 1984 Sikh “genocide memorial”.
“We are doing no wrong. No authority has any right to raise any objection to our peaceful endeavour. The five high priests of Sikhs would lay the foundation stone on June 12. There is no change in our plan,” DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK said.
The NDMC on Friday pasted a notice at the gate of Gurdwara Rakabganj saying “no illegal construction was permitted inside the Gurdwara complex”. It also raised objection on a 3ft-wide and 4ft-high wall constructed for foundation stone ceremony inside the complex.
Singh said the decision to build the memorial was taken after discussions with an eleven-member committee constituted to look into the issues related to the building of the memorial. “We will go ahead with our plan and the government can’t create a hurdle into personal issues of Sikhs,” Singh said.
DSGMC general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the committee would stick to the building bye-laws while constructing the memorial. “We have already announced that height of the memorial would not be more than 22ft,” Sirsa said.
“No additional building is being constructed in the area as the memorial with tentative covered area of 10,000 sq ft would be constructed only after the demolition of 15,000 square feet structure,” he added.
An attempt to commemorate a park in Punjabi Bagh in November 2012 for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots was also stalled by the government.
