Delhi: Tallest ATC tower beats Qutab Minar
After being delayed by more than a year, the new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower of the Delhi airport is now coming up fast. Sidhartha Roy reports.
After being delayed by more than a year, the new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower of the Delhi airport is now coming up fast.
The under-contruction tower, which will be the tallest ATC tower in the country, is already taller than the Qutab Minar (72.5 metres).
At 102 metres, the new ATC tower will be much taller than the monument and almost double the airport’s existing ATC tower, which it has already surpassed in height by reaching 73 metres of height.
The tower was initially planned to be opened by mid-2012 but is now expected to be commissioned only by November 2013.
The new ATC tower, expected to cost more than Rs.350 crore, is coming up at a more centralised location at the airport, so that air traffic controllers can have a 360 degree view of all the three runways, aprons and taxiways.
The present ATC complex and 60 metre high tower was built in 1999 and is at a considerable distance from the third runway constructed in 2008.
There are three operational runways at the airport and a fourth is planned when traffic increases.
