Delhi upset over Iran’s J&K remark

Iran’s Charge De Affairs Reza Alaei was summoned to South Block for issuing of this strong demarche.
Also in a tit-for-tat diplomatic move, India for the first time, abstained from voting on the UN resolution on the human rights violations in Iran.
These developments show New Delhi, barring issues like Taliban integration, hasn’t made much common ground with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government. Tehran, on its part, feels New Delhi has tilted towards the US and Israel to a great degree.
Since July, Iran has on three occasions made remarks about supporting the “struggle” in Kashmir and bracketed the situation with that in Gaza and Afghanistan. The recent remarks were made by Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Today the major duties of the elite of the Islamic Ummah is to provide help to the Palestinian nation and the besieged people of Gaza, to sympathise and provide assistance to the nations of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Kashmir,” he told Hajj pilgrims in Tehran.
Sources refused to treat these remarks as “major setback” to the overall relationship, saying the two nations have civilisational links and share similar views on many issues.
However, noting that it was a matter of concern, the sources said these comments have factored into India’s decision to abstain from voting on the UN resolution.
In an official reaction, ministry of external affairs said, “our decision on the vote was made after due deliberation.”
They said India continues to monitor the developments in the matter.
