Dressed in their best, Christians visited their relatives and friends and exchanged cakes and hugs after attending midnight mass in churches spread across the city.

Churches, including the oldest cathedral in the Capital Sacred Heart, were decked up with twinkling lights and extravagantly decorated Christmas trees.

About 15,000 people, including a large number of children, teenagers and senior citizens, attended the midnight mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral at Gol Dak Khana in the heart of the Capital.

A large number of faithful lit candles at the Cathedral where a huge Christmas tree full of sparkling lights and balloons was erected.
People also sang carol songs like Silent Night and Drummer Boy.

The weather was also pleasant even as a thin layer of mist greeted those on way to attend early morning Christmas mass.

President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the people on the occasion of Christmas, saying it is an occasion to celebrate and imbibe Christ's message of brotherhood, compassion and forgiveness.
