Delhiites sweat out to hottest day this summer

Delhi witnessed the hottest day of the season so far, with the maximum temperature touching 37.6 degrees, four degrees above normal. The morning temperature too was high at 22 degrees, three degrees above normal.

What’s more, the temperatures are going to escalate further in the coming five days.

“As summer has begun, we can only expect the temperatures to go up. The coming week will be similar to Sunday in terms of temperature though there might be light rain showers in some places on Tuesday. The showers, however, will not affect the temperatures and they will remain high,” said a senior MeT official.

Monday is also expected to be hot and uncomfortable with a partly cloudy sky expected to hitch-up the minimum temperature. The temperature is expected to be between 38 degrees and 22 degrees on Monday.

“Sunday was very hot and uncomfortable. The temperatures have been quite comfortable so far and we were hoping to get away with a light summer this year. But I am not as hopeful now,” said Rajeev Varma, a resident of Saket.

Some people have even started to switch on their air-conditioners in order to beat the heat.

“I know it is early but the afternoon was just too hot to bear. Till last week, we had not even switched on our fans but were forced to switch on the AC for an hour in the afternoon today,” said Shweta Gupta, a resident of Dwarka, Sector 11.

Delhi and the surrounding areas experienced a long and bitterly cold winter this year, with low temperatures persisting till mid-February. Places such as Srinagar, Shimla and Manali, that have a direct effect on Delhi’s weather witnessed snowfall as late as early March.
