While Shivaji stadium is being developed as a practice venue for hockey, Talkatora will be used for swimming and boxing.

Having come under sharp scrutiny after Commonwealth Games Federation chief Michael Fennell expressed his concerns about Delhi’s ability to be ready in time for the 2010 Games, Dikshit once again tried to allay fears of not meeting deadlines.

A statement quoted Dikshit as stating that “all stadiums of the capital would be upgraded well before the commencement of Commonwealth Games 2010”.

“The chief minister has also asked the officials to ensure that the ambience around the stadiums was also improved. She has asked for extensive greening and removal of encroachments in the vicinity,” said an official.

While Talkatora stadium is being refurbished by NDMC at a cost of Rs 150 crore, Shivaji stadium is being renovated at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
