"The Sheila Dikshit government's move is politically motivated. Their only aim is to usurp the rights of MCD," said Yogender Chandolia, chairman, MCD's standing committee.

Chandolia, has written a letter to the union home minister P Chidambaram, demanding that the Delhi government's proposal to divide MCD should not be accepted.

The Delhi government, which has been critical of Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) functioning under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Monday set up a high-powered committee to examine possible division of the civic body into a number of 'workable units' to enhance its performance.

The government had in the past set up various administrative committees to recommend reorganisation of the civic body but this is for the first time a committee comprising political leaders has been formed.

The committee will be headed by Delhi finance minister AK Walia and its four members are transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and senior BJP leaders VK Malhotra and Jagdish Mukhi.

"Five panels have been set up so far on the issue and now we have got another panel," added Chandolia.
