The notice that was issued on January 9 gave the varsity 15 days to pay up or face consequences such as the attachment of its bank accounts.
Officials said that DU had been evading tax, saying it was a charitable trust.
"All other central universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia and the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi are paying property tax to the civic body minus any exemption and DU is also equally placed," said a senior official.
