DU panel meets to clear syllabus

A panel comprising deans of faculties, elected teachers and high-ranking officials of Delhi University met on Saturday to discuss and offer its recommendations on the syllabus of all the courses under the new four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), starting from July.

The standing committee held deliberations over many hours about the course content of the FYUP.

“The syllabus for each course was discussed in a detailed manner. The committee gave its recommendations on various aspects of the course such as reading material and content. The department heads will incorporate these changes and the revised syllabus will then be sent to the academic council,” said Umesh Rai, director, south campus, DU.

The standing committee’s job is to vet the syllabus before it is sent for approval to the academic council, which will meet on May 7.

By Saturday evening, deliberations on an estimated 27 courses were completed with the rest expected to be discussed on Sunday.

“We have been able to cover around 50% of the courses as of now. Courses of faculties such as science are almost done. Discussion on a sizeable number of faculty of arts courses is also over. Major faculties remaining are social sciences, mathematical sciences, management studies, among others,” said Rai.

Interestingly, despite the criticism that the new programme has been facing protest from some quarters, notably teachers, Rai said no disruptions were witnessed during the meeting of the standing committee. “There was no discussion about the programme, only about the course content,” he said.
