DU poll: Frontline contenders discuss radical changes

With the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election set to be held on September 14, the varsity’s two frontline contenders are discussing broad-level changes.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) are aiming at revamping some of the university’s systems.

In 2011, the Congress’ youth wing, NSUI, won the presidential seat, while ABVP bagged the remaining three posts.
While last year, NSUI had focused on reducing the hostel, tuition and examination fees of students, this year they are aiming at subsidising college application fees.
“The admission system this time was very disappointing, as the application fee had been hiked by 100%. We will now push for free online admissions and also ensure that the SC/ST admissions are decentralised; a lot of students came to us with complaints and irregularities in the admissions,” said Ajay Chhikara, president of DUSU and member of NSUI.
The opposition ABVP is now looking at providing adequate transport to those flocking off-campus colleges.
This, they say, is an attempt at looking beyond the betterment of North Campus colleges.
“There is a shortage of U-Special buses. Even though the Delhi Metro has made life simpler for those coming to the North Campus, students who go to off-campus colleges such as Bhagini Nivedita and Aditi Mahavidyalaya find commuting extremely difficult,” said Rohit Chahal, state secretary, ABVP.
