The victim was identified as Neha Jindal. Her mother is a sub-inspector with Delhi Police and her father deals in electronics. Jindal’s body was found around 7 pm.

Jindal had completed her BCom from Delhi University.

Jindal’s father claimed somebody had been threatening her for the last four months, and he had complained about it at the local police station.

Police said the incident looked like a case of suicide.

“We have called the forensic experts to examine the case. Preliminary investigations reveal that Jindal set herself on fire,” said Sagarpreet Hooda, deputy commissioner of police (north).

Police said Jindal’s younger sister left for tuitions around 6.30 pm on Tuesday and her mother, who is posted at Parliament House, used to return home around 7.15 pm everyday.

“No one was present in the house when the incident took place. It was between the time her sister left for tuitions and before her mother could return that she set herself on fire. A neighbour informed the police control room (PCR),” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
