The victim’s father, elder brother and three other relatives were also injured after they were attacked by a local hooligan, his family and other accomplices, police said. The incident took place around 10pm following an argument between the two groups over the victim and his brother taking an evening walk in the locality where the accused stay.

Sources said main accused, Sanjay Chaudhary, fired four bullets out of which one grazed 20-year-old Manish Singh Chaudhary alias Mannu’s neck while another hit him in the abdomen. Police said that to mislead the investigators, Sanjay even shot at himself with his pistol and inflicted a minor injury on his shoulder.

Sanjay’s mother Saroj is also among the accused and she has been arrested. She allegedly ordered her two sons to shoot the victims and “kill all of them”. She is also accused of having unleashed her two Rottweilers on the victims.

The victims include Mannu, who died in the incident, his father Rajveer Singh Chaudhary, 45, elder brother Sushil Singh Chaudhary, 26, and three relatives — Sripal Chaudhary, Deepak and Raja — all residents of Shiv Chowk in Ranjeet Nagar.

Police said Mannu and his brother Sushil were walking in the area when they were beaten up by the accused and his goons. The duo then went home and informed their family.

“An argument broke out between us and they attacked us with swords and batons. Sanjay fired four bullets and killed my brother,” said Sushil.

Family members of the victim and local residents blocked the main Patel Nagar road in protest for over 3 hours around 1pm. They alleged the local police were trying to shield the accused and shouted slogans against the police.

“They killed my son; I want to see the accused dead,” said Mannu’s mother Kashmiri Devi.

Traffic movement from the Shankar Road-Patel Nagar roundabout till Kirti Nagar was severely affected due to the protest.

Devesh Chandra Srivastava, additional CP (central), said a case was registered at Ranjeet Nagar police station.

“Sanjay Chaudhary is undergoing treatment at Sir Gangaram Hospital. His brother Rahul is absconding. Sanjay has four criminal cases against him while his mother is also accused in three different cases,” said Srivastava.
