Mamta and her younger sister, Nirja, were rescued from their Rohini home by their relatives and neighbours on Saturday. A failed marriage had reportedly plunged Mamta into depression.

“She (Mamta) told us that she was feeling hot, and asked us to switch on the fan. She is responding to treatment and we are hoping for speedy recovery,” a relative said.

Four members were living in the house located in Rohini’s sector 29 — Mamta, 40, Nirja, 29, their mother Nirmala Devi and Mamta’s son. 15.

“The younger sister’s condition is stable. The condition of the elder sister though critical, has not deteriorated since the treatment begun. Her infection is being controlled with antibiotics, and we are taking all measures to ensure their road to recovery remains smooth,” said a senior doctor at the hospital, where they are being treated.

Neeraj, Mamta’s cousin, said that all four members of the family were attached to each other and always stuck together.

Meanwhile Woman and Child Development minister Kiran Walia visited the sisters at the Ambedkar Hospital on Monday and assured of all possible help from Delhi government.

“We will provide monetary assistance and counselling to them. Counselling for the younger sister has already started,” Walia said.
