“My younger daughter woke up and saw the dog mauling my son. She raised an alarm and called me. As I rushed in, I saw the dog had already bitten my son’s eyes, nose and cheeks,” said Mukesh Kumar, Divansh’s father.

Mukesh and his wife Geeta rushed the child to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where he was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“Doctors operated upon him but he succumbed to injuries,” said an inconsolable Geeta.

Mukesh said that they had never seen the dog before in their area and claimed that it was not a stray dog, saying it had a leash around the neck. “Maybe it was a mad dog abandoned by its owners,” Geeta said.

The incident took place around 6.15 a.m. Mukesh, a daily wager, had gone out of the house to fill water. The infant was sleeping along with his two sisters, Manisha (6) and Ninnu (2) inside one of the rooms when the dog entered the house and attacked the baby. “As soon as my husband saw the dog he picked up a broomstick and started hitting it. The dog also tried to attack him but ran away,” said Geeta.
