Four states doing well on low carbon growth: WWF study

Just four of the 10 states studied for low carbon growth strategy have got the top billing in the new ranking released by World Wide Fund (WWF) for nature on Tuesday.



Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are the top performers in practicing low carbon policies, the report based on European methodology for tracking of low carbon growth, says.

The project was initiated in the ten states, which have climate change action plans, namely- Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Arunachal Pradesh.

The tracker assessed the states on the basis of the actions taken by them in last 10 years towards low-carbon policies. Around 60 indicators were identified both quantitative and qualitative

T.S. Panwar, Head of Climate Change, WWF says, “The main aim of the tracker is to stimulate the action by comparing and encouraging leading practices.”

The tracker results have revealed that of the ten states analyzed, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have emerged as top performers, rated “C”, on a 7 point scale ranging from A to G, with “A” being the highest.

Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan ranked in the “D” category, while Arunachal Pradesh was categorized as “E”.

Eight sectors namely Power, Industry, Buildings, transport, Forestry,Waste, Agriculture and General were identifies as capable of emitting green house gases (GHGs).

Tamil Nadu has been ranked highest in practicing low carbon policies in the Forestry sector; Rajasthan in the building sector; Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka in the power sector; Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu in the Industry sector; Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat in the waste sector and Andhra Pradesh, Delhi in the General sector.

“The acquiring of the data and selection of the states for sampling were a major concern while carrying out the project. While the first report has been launched we are still working on the project and looking forward to expand it.” added TS Panwar.
