The incident was reported from Devli village near Neb Sarai around 6.30am. The victim has been identified as Netrapal, who was a fruit vendor.

“According to eyewitnesses, the victim was waiting to fill water from a roadside tap in a group of five-six people on the pavement when the speeding tanker hit them,” said an officer.

The errant driver lost control of his vehicle after colliding into a telephone pole and failed to move away from the pavement. Two people from the group managed to escape unhurt and three others were injured.

“Onlookers rushed all three to an adjacent private hospital, where Netrapal was declared dead while the other two were discharged after being administered primary first-aid,” the officer said.

The tanker driver was later identified as Kuldeep, 18. He has been arrested for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
