Muslim community members led by Matia Mahal MLA Shoaib Iqbal had carried out digging at the site - originally identified for the proposed underground Jama Masjid metro station - that had led to the discovery of archaeological remains last week.

Iqbal had claimed the ruins to be that of 1650-built Akbarabadi mosque.

The Delhi circle report said, "The archaeological ruins are that of a structure contemporary of Red Fort. The pottery and other remains found is a typical Mughal era period material."

Officials said further action would be taken only as per the instructions of the DG ASI.

Metro officials had altered the plan for the station in view of the development.
