Good vs evil reloaded

From eco-friendly Raavan effigies to the ones that have noise free crackers, this Dussehra promises to be different.

This year, the Dussehra celebrations in the city are aiming to be different than previous years. For example, Ramlila committees in the city have decided to burn eco-friendly effigies this year. From using recycled material for making the Raavan effigy to using crackers that produce less pollution, all is being done to make the festival environment friendly.

“We have kept the Raavan effigy environment friendly. The basic structure is being made from recycled materials. The quantity of crackers that is being used is lesser than last year and we are also using crackers that give less pollution,” says Arjun Kumar, Secretary Lav Kush Ramlila Committee. Apart from eco-friendly effigies, committees are also adding other special effects. “We will be using noise-free crackers in the Raavan effigy. Our effigy of Raavan is 70 feet tall and recycled material is used for making it. What makes it even more exciting is that the Raavan will make laughing noises and will even rotate his hands. While people celebrate Dussehra by burning three effigies of Raavan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnath, we will also be burning another smaller effigy — that of corruption,” says Manoj Garg, treasurer, Shri Ramleela Committee Greater Noida.

Like the previous years, the effigies of some of the committees are expected to be around 100 feet tall this year too. “The height of the Raavan effigy is expected to be around 100 feet, followed by 95 feet for Kumbhkaran and 90 feet for Meghnath. This time, we are planning something different with the fireworks show,” says Rahul Sharma, Press Secretary of Nav Shri Dharmik Leela Committee.
