GPS in 1000 city buses every month

In the first major step towards enforcing road discipline among the “killer” bluelines and DTC buses in the capital, the Transport Department of the Delhi Government has decided to install Global Positioning (GPS) System in 1000 buses every month from now.

This means that all 7,500 on Delhi’s roads, including blue lines and DTC will have GPS within the next eight months. The decision to install the system in 500 buses each of DTC and blueline was taken after a successful trial of the system conducted on 100 DTC buses of the Sukhdev Vihar depot, Transport Commissioner R K Verma submitted before the Delhi High Court.

The GPS allows real-time tracking of bus movement and information on its location. A Bench of justices Vikramjit Sen and A K Pathak had summoned Verma on Thursday, angry over the delay in implementing the court’s orders regarding phase-out of the bluelines, procurement of alternate buses and installation of GPS system.

Contempt threat exists

Following the assurances by Verma, the Bench extended the temporary permits of 2,500 bluelines for another four months. “We permit renewal of licenses for four months. But file a detailed affidavit within four weeks, apprising the court of the compliance of statements made by the Transport Commissioner. If there is no compliance, we will initiate contempt proceedings,” the court warned.
