The Group of Ministers (GoM) on the issue, headed by finance minister P Chidambaram, met for the first time on Thursday. After the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), gave a presentation before the panel-that highlighted current laws and previous court judgment on the Vineet Narayan case-the ministers discussed if a new law is required to adhere to the SC's directions.

"We identified the issues that need to be addressed," Chidambaram said.

Union minister Kapil Sibal also pointed out that the broad parameters of 'CBI's independence' need to be defined.
