What should be done to strengthen Delhi’s public transport?
We cannot see Delhi in isolation. We have to see the NCR in totality. Metro rail is really successful and I think it is a good idea to introduce other modes of transport like monorail. For the NCR area, the NCR Planning Board has come up with a detailed orbital rapid rail system. Dedicated bus corridors connecting Delhi with neighbouring cities is also being planned.

Last-mile connectivity continues to be a problem. What is the way out?
The good thing is that by 2021 Delhi Metro would be available within 500m of every household. In Moscow, Tokyo and London, people walk down to Metro stations. Government’s plan to run private buses in 17 clusters will also serve as feeder to the Metro.

We have seen abroad that people prefer riding bicycles than driving cars. Can’t we have similar culture here?
In Europe, there is a separate lane for cyclists and the network is integrated with fast moving traffic. We need to have a strong will power and a masterplan to develop cycle network in Delhi. Make people understand that such a network is for their mobility and safety.
