'He had an obsession for eradicating terrorism'

Septuagenarian Narottam Sharma remembers his son Mohan Chand Sharma - killed during an encounter three years ago at Batla House - every living moment. But his grief grows whenever there is a blast in the Capital.

"My son wanted to eliminate terrorism and died while killing terrorists. Now, whenever there is a blast, I feel that my son died in vain," said Sharma.

He vividly remembers the morning of September 19, 2008, when he last saw his son alive. "Around 9am, he was having breakfast, when he got a call from someone. He immediately left without telling anything to us. Around noon, we received a call informing us about the shootout," he added. He never saw him alive, again.

Mohan Chand Sharma, who joined the Delhi Police as a Sub-Inspector in 1989, is survived by his wife, daughter Himani and son Divyanshu.

"We never thought that our only son would be killed. He had an obsession for eradicating terrorism. He would never wear a bullet-proof jacket while going for an encounter," said Devendri Devi, the slain cop's mother.

After Sharma's death, his wife got a teaching job at a nearby government school.

The home ministry continues to provide security to Sharma's family. "They have taken away the vehicle given to him but security is still in place," said Sharma.
