His family said Sharma even apologised when some goons at the petrol pump were allegedly beating him up. A security guard allegedly opened fire at him at the behest of the pump’s manager. His fault was that he was relieving himself outside the petrol pump.

“He only wanted to have cola. He had already got the fuel, but went back to the convenience store adjacent to the petrol pump to buy snacks and drinks,” said PK Sharma, the victim's father. “He would have been alive had he not gone there.”

Sharma and his family were to go to Shirdi in Maharashtra to donate clothes at a girls' school. On Wednesday before heading for the petrol pump, Sharma went to buy clothes for the Shirdi visit.

Sharma did his schooling from DAV Public School and was doing a course in MBA from a private university.

“He was an enterprising young man. Though we have a family business, he chose to start his own firm. Within four months, he did well and made profit,” said the father. “He was killed for no fault of his own.”

Police said they have registered a case of murder at the Anand Vihar police station and arrested the accused security guard. The father claimed that the manager was under the influence of alcohol and entered into an argument with his son unnecessarily.

“We are probing the role of the petrol pump manager,” said Anand Mohan, additional commissioner of police (east).

The security guard has been arrested.
