Around 8.80 lakh people took the Metro trains on Saturday which is more than 1 lakh on an average on Friday generating a revenue of over Rs 1 crore.

With almost all the major intersections flooded with water and roads blocked due to heavy traffic jams, commuters opted for metro services.

Even Rahul Gandhi had to take a metro train from Dwarka Sector 9 to Rajiv Chowk station to avoid the maddening jams. Rahul, accompanied by his SPG Guards, took the metro from Dwarka Sector 9 station at 9.30 pm and reached his destination around 10.20 pm.

Informed sources said Rahul and two of his guards took the metro without causing any inconvenience to the commuters.

DMRC officials said there was a substantial increase in metro ridership yesterday as an additional one lakh people took the train. Metro services were not interrupted due to the rains that lasted for two hours.

The stations which witnessed the heaviest rush were Yamuna Bank, Rajiv Chowk, Jahangirpuri and Uttam Nagar (East).

Sandhya Sinha, who drives to home from her office in Connaught Place, said he parked her vehicle in the office and took a metro from Rajiv Chowk. "I reached my home in Laxmi Nagar within 30 minutes as I took a metro till Yamuna Bank."
