A middle-aged woman working as a domestic help may be behind the murder of a retired income tax commissioner in Rohini on Wednesday, police sources said.

Sources said the woman was earlier working at a garment shop and had been hired by the murdered 70-year-old only 15 days ago.

Closed circuit TV footage from the shop showing her has been collected by police.

"Gurjeet Kaur Puri had hired Nandini as a domestic help nearly 15 days ago. We are collecting information about her. It is already known that she had introduced herself to her former employer as Sonia, or Sonu," a senior police officer said.

The police said Puri was careful about the domestic helps she employed and gave details to her daughter.

The sources said Nandini had wanted to buy an old sofa from Puri. On Wednesday, she told her employer that she was coming with her husband to take away the sofa. Puri had talked of Nandini's proposed visit to her daughter.

"We suspect that the woman had come with her husband and another man in the afternoon and killed Puri. The area security guard has also told us that he saw Nandini coming out of the house with two men," the officer added.

Puri's regular domestic help found her gagged and bounded around 4pm. She informed the neighbours and the police.

Puri's husband is dead. Her two daughters are married and son lives abroad.

The police have taken finger prints and statements of Puri's neighbours.

The police feel that the two men gagged her after she tried raising an alarm and she died because of suffocation. A case of murder has been registered at the Rohini police station.
