Higher one-time parking charges from next fiscal

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will implement the enhanced night parking fee from next month. This fee is an amount that a buyer has to pay at the time of registering of his vehicle.

Those planning to buy cars priced between Rs 4 lakh to R10 lakh will have to shell out Rs 12,000 as night parking charge against the current Rs 4,000.

For luxury cars costing more than R10 lakh, the buyers will have to pay R20,000. Earlier, there were no such charges for cars falling under this category.

The proposal was cleared by the Standing Committee on Wednesday.

“The proposal has been cleared in the Standing Committee meeting and the new rates will be applicable from April 1,” said Deep Mathur, director press and information, MCD.

The cash-strapped civic agency has been trying to look at ways of increasing its revenue and hopes to earn some extra money through this exercise.

“A number of our multi-level and conventional parking lots are still under construction and there has been a huge increase in the cost of building materials. Money is needed to make sure that all these parking lots are completed on time,” said a senior MCD official.

Even as the civic agency has increased the night parking charges, it has not been able to construct a single multi-level parking lot in the city till date.

For the past seven years it has been trying to construct 21 conventional multi-level parking, 15 automated multi-level and four stack parking lots but none of them are ready yet.

In addition to this, MCD has also doubled the annual fee for commercial vehicles wherein buses will now have to pay Rs 6,000, which is up from the earlier charge of R4,000.

Keeping in mind the growing number of private and radio taxis that have all-India permit, MCD plans to charge Rs 10,000 annually as night parking charges.
