Hit-and-run boy identified

The Delhi police has identified the eight-year-old child, who bled to death after an accident, as policemen, quibbling over details, refused to carry him to the near by hospital. Sumit Saxena reports.

The policemen turned a deaf ear to numerous request of a Delhi judge, who was present at the spot. Deputy Commissioner of police, West District, Sharad Aggarwal said, “The boy’s name was Mahender and his father’s name is Pradeep.”

-A head constable held the boy's arm and told the judge: “Dekho isme kuch nahi bacha hai. Ye pehle hi mar chuka hai. (He is already dead).
-When the judge told the cops they were not qualified to declare a person dead, they spewed abuse at him.

According to police officials, the victim was a daily wage earner with a marriage band company. “His father came to the hospital and identified him.” But the address of the victim in police records has not been verified.

The family of the child remains untraceable. The chilling incident happened on the intervening night of May 31 and June 1 on Bahadurgarh Road in Mundka around 12.30 am in front of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), North-East District, Lokesh Kumar Sharma.

The policemen declared the boy as dead, even as Kumar protested. The shocked judge wrote a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal narrating the cold-blooded response of the two policemen. “I am of the opinion that besides the driver of the vehicle, the two police officials are equally responsible and guilty of the death of the child because had he been provided the medical care on time, the situation might have been otherwise…” the judge said in his letter, a copy of which is with HT.
