The university remains flooded with applications for hostel accommodation with demand far exceeding capacity.

The court upheld a set of rules laid down by the university to ensure that former students do not get admission to hostels just because they have taken admission to another course.

The DU rules stipulated that the applicant should have cleared the last course in which he or she was enrolled.

The student should not have any adverse disciplinary recordinanyhostelorcollegepreviously attended.

“The university is justified in denying admission to those unable to clear the terminal examination in the last course. Not only the accommodation but the food being much cheaper than outside, it is not uncommon for certain ex-students to seek hostel admission by registering in another course though they may not at all be sincere towards their studies,” said justice VK Jain.

The court made the remarks while dismissing a petition filed by a student, Sanjeev Bahl, challenging denial of admission in DU’s Gwyer Hall after he enrolled with the law faculty for a Ph.D course.

University lawyer MJS Rupal told the court that he was not eligible for hostel accommodation as he had not even appeared for the final exams in MA Philosophy course for which he had enrolled last.

During the interview process, he allegedly created a ruckus and used derogatory language against the hostel authorities, Rupal said.

“The purpose of providing boarding and lodging in the university hostel is to place bonafide students in an environment that is conducive for students so that they are able to concentrate on their studies without having to look for accommodation and food in the market,” said the court.
