According to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the Indian railways — one of the biggest employer in the world — in the last three years reported 70,126 crimes being committed on trains.

Almost one fifth of the total crimes took place in Maharashtra, making it the most unsafe state for train passengers.

Maharashtra was followed by Uttar Pradesh (11831), and Chhattisgarh (6939), making them equally unsafe for passengers.

From theft, robbery and dacoity to rape, murder and riots — every thing took place in trains. In the last three years, 1141 attempts were made on the life of people onboard, of which 764 resulted in deaths, the NCRB report said.

The largest components of crime were theft, robbery and burglary which totaled to about 50,000 of the crimes reported.

The NCRB report further points the increasing number of rapes in trains, which has increased by more than 40% from 2011.

The number of kidnapping and abduction were 426, in which more than 50% victims were women and girls.
