After working for 11 months as a software engineer with a multinational company in Gurgaon, Amit Dey quit.
The reason: he felt software was not his true calling in life.
His parents, both government servants, were shocked.
When Dey told them he was interested in photography “they thought I had gone mad and tried to explain to me how the decision could ruin my life”.
“But I went ahead and quit my job and joined a photography institute to learn the nuances of photography,” says the soft-spoken Dey, who completed his Bachelor in Information Technology from Delhi University in 2001.
He bought a camera and other photography equipment from the money he’d saved from his 11-month stint at the software firm.
Today, 29-year-old Dey is a well- known fashion photographer. He has done advertising shoots for top -notch advertising companies such as McCann Erickson, Taglairino Advertising, Ogilvy, and counts Coca-Cola, Reebok and LG among his clients.
He’s also shot stills for Rituparno Ghosh’s Khela starring Manisha Koirala, Raima Sen and Prasanjit.
In 2007, his works were exhibited in the prestigious ‘Asia: an itinerary on the silk way’ exhibition in Italy that showcased the works of some of the best photographers of Asia.
His father is a happy man now. “Now he proudly tells everyone his son is a photographer and even asks people to consider photography as a career option for their children,” Dey laughs.
