The malnourished body of the infant was found abandoned at platform number 12 on Sunday morning. “Her body, found around 7.30am on Monday morning, bore no apparent injury marks and has been preserved at the Subzi Mandi mortuary. A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Tuesday if no one comes forward to claim it,” said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional DCP (railways).

Clad in a yellow vest beneath a dirty, red jersey, this is the first such case reported of a dead infant being discovered at a railway station in the city so far this year, police claimed.

However, in four other similar instances infants barely old enough to be able to speak were recovered by the railway police till the end of October, 2011.

“On February 15, a newborn girl child’s body was recovered from a toilet aboard the Utkal Express when it halted at the Nizamuddin railway station. The child was barely a day old,” said a senior police officer.
