Popular courses
Jamia offers plenty of options for students with varied interests considering there are more than 255 courses to choose from for undergraduate, master’s or doctoral education as well as certificate or diploma studies.

The varsity is known for its professional courses such as Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Education.

"BTech is the most popular course here. We get around 30,000-35,000 applications every year for the 350 seats in total in the civil, mechanical, electrical, computers and electronics and telecommunication streams," said Simi Malhotra, the media coordinator of Jamia.

Other professional courses preferred by students include Bachelor in Architecture, Bachelor in Physiotherapy and Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS). The AJK Mass Communication Research Centre’s programmes are also much sought-after.

The more traditional programmes, such as Bachelor in English, too evoke a healthy response each year. “We have 60 seats for this programme but end up receiving 2,000 applications every year,” Malhotra said.

Bachelor of Business Studies and in bio-sciences and biotechnology have also seen increased demand in the recent years.

The Centre for Management Studies’ (CMS) flagship full-time MBA programme which offers a specialisation in marketing, finance and human resources receives more than 6,000 applications for its 60 seats.

“We have a placement cell that ensures that all our students get jobs. Last year’s highest pay package was Rs. 12 lakh,” said UM Amin, director of CMS.

Unique points
Unlike Delhi University, Jamia does not simply rely on a student’s Class XII marks and instead conducts an entrance test to judge a student’s abilities.
