JEE row: CBSE told to give answer keys to students
Disposing of a petition filed against the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) by 15 students who obtained lower than expected scores in the Joint Engineering Examination (JEE) Main exam, the court directed the board to provide them with their OMR sheet, calculation sheet and answer keys before May 29.
The petition, filed in Delhi high court on May 13, said the aggrieved students had obtained up to 150 marks lower than they calculated. They sought their optical mark recognition (OMR) sheet, calculation sheet and answer keys from the CBSE so they could review their scores.
The JEE main exam has replaced the All India Engineering Entrance Examination this year for admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes. The petitioner wanted permission to sit for the JEE Advanced exam on June 2, the second level qualifying exam for Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)s, subject to the reviewed outcome of their JEE Main result.
However, at the hearing on Wednesday, the CBSE counsel told the court it had already decided to provide the documents to students. “We informed the court that we have verified the petitioners’ question papers and solutions and do not see a change in their marks,” said CBSE’s counsel Amit Bansal.
The petitioner’s lawyer Aashish Mishra said the court directed CBSE to provide his clients with their OMR sheet, calculation sheet and answer keys before May 29. “If we still have any grievance, the court has given us the liberty to file a fresh petition and we will exercise that option if need be,” he said.
However, parents of students who have scored low marks are dejected. “We are extremely disappointed. My son Manu Sharma was expecting 220 out of 360 in JEE main but was shocked to get only 81 marks and is not eligible for JEE advanced. We will continue the fight,” said Krishna Gopal Sharma, parent of a petitioner.
