A 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a placement agency owner in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Vihar on Tuesday. Police said the woman from Jharkhand came to the city looking for employment. Police have arrested the accused and he has been sent to jail.

The victim alleged the accused brought her to the city seven months ago and sexually assaulted her. On Tuesday around 10 pm, the victim with the help of a neighbour called the police. The accused, who has been identified as Manoj Kumar, was arrested after the woman gave a complaint to the police.

The victim told the police she was sexually harassed by the accused who had promised her a job. The accused, who is physically challenged, brought several women from states like Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar and provided them jobs in the city. He was running the placement agency from a one-room rented accommodation in Munirka.

After bringing the women, he used to keep them in that dingy accommodation. To this victim, the accused had even promised to marry her. A medical examination of the victim at the Safdarjung Hospital confirmed rape.

The incident comes in the wake of the recent Delhi High Court order that asked the police to investigate incidents of harassment of women being brought to the city on pretext of jobs. In the first week of May, the Malviya Nagar police had registered a case of rape, molestation and criminal breach of trust against a placement agency owner in Lado Sarai. The women in the age group of 15-22 years said they were regularly harassed by the placement agency owners seeking sexual favours.
