Lyngdoh laws haunt DU polls

The Delhi HC ordered a fresh scrutiny of the nominations filed for the DUSU elections report, Harish V Nair and Anuradha Mukherjee.

The Delhi High Court on Monday ordered a fresh scrutiny of the nominations filed for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections and told the student body that polls will have to be conducted strictly in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court based on the Lyngdoh Committee report.

• All candidates must have attained the minimum percentage of attendance set by the university
• 17-22 years is the age limit for UG students, while PG students should not be above 25 years old

The ruling will create hiccups for many aspirants who had either taken fresh admissions after failing in exams, or were above the stipulated age. The most worrying clause for student leaders is the one that states that all candidates must have attained the minimum percentage of attendance set by the university.

The court dismissed a batch of petitions filed by DUSU aspirants. A fresh scrutiny of the nominations will be conducted on August 29. The election is slated to be held on September 7. DUSU chief election officer Gurmeet Singh said: “We will strictly follow the court order.”
