Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday to demand abolition of the law on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and scrapping of the 1894 Land Acquisition Act.
Addressing a public meeting later on the “atrocities” the Left Front government in West Bengal, she stated that the PM had expressed sympathy for the families of those killed in the SEZ agitation. Alleging that fertile land was forcibly being taken away from farmers , Banerji demanded that is should be returned to them and urged the UPA Government to intervene in the matter even though it was being supported at the Centre by the Left.
She later led protestors from Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and JD (U) in a protest march towards Parliament House but was stopped by police on the way. On Monday, the Trinamool leader had met President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam seeking his intervention.
