The accused, Israr-ul-Haq, 42, belongs to Jaipur. He was arrested from ISBT, Kashmere Gate, while he was about to board a bus for Jaipur.

An idol of Lord Vishnu worth around Rs 1 crore has been recovered from Haq. Police said the idol dates back to 13th century AD and probably belongs to the Sena dynasty or Deva kingdom of medieval Bengal.

“It is an idol of Lord Vishnu. The height and width of the idol are 41 inches and 16 inches, respectively. The antique piece dates back to about 13th century AD. The accused had received it from one Tapas of Nadia district in West Bengal. It was stolen from a temple in Malda,” said Joy Tirkey, additional DCP (crime).

A case under the IPC and the Antiquity and Art Treasures Act, 1972 has been registered, he added. Tirkey said Haq worked for one Shakeel. Shakeel was arrested in a similar case in October 2009 by the IP Estate police in Delhi.
