Man dies of stroke while standing in bank queue in east Delhi

Postmortem reports suggested Sardar Narinder Singh reached died due to a clot in the brain

A 57-year-old man died of stroke while he was in a bank queue in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Friday, to withdraw money.

Sardar Narinder Singh reached Punjab and Sindh Bank at 10.30 am to withdraw Rs 24,000 using a cheque. The bank wasn’t crowded, police said. At 10.45 am, on reaching the counter, Singh felt uneasy and collapsed. They said Singh couldn’t even complete his signature on the cheque.

The bank staff immediately rushed him to a dispensary inside a gurdwara at Jheel Chowk where doctors declared him dead.

The bank is near Singh’s house in Rani Garden. His family was informed about. Staff also informed the police station concerned and cops rushed to the spot.

“Postmortem was conducted at a mortuary near Sabzi Mandi. Reports suggest the cause of death was embolic stroke as the deceased had a clot in the brain,” said deputy commissioner of police (east), Omvir Singh.

Singh’s family also confirmed that he suffered from a blood clot in the brain. He was being treated for the ailment for the last eight years.

Singh’s brother, Gurcharan Singh, said, “The bank staff also knew him and they rushed him to a nearby dispensary. By the time we reached, he was declared dead.”

Sardar Narinder Singh is survived by a son, daughter and wife Raj Bindra (52), who is a library in-charge at Sanchar Bhawan.

“I was at Sanchar Bhawan when my daughter informed me about the incident. I had already left and did not know he had gone to the bank. We were not short on cash or anything. Since the demonetization announcement, it was his second visit to the bank, I think.”

Singh was a financer and had rented out his three-wheeler auto rickshaws in Geeta Colony. His son, Manpreet Singh (34) also worked with him.

Manpreet alleged his father wore a golden ‘kara’ worth a lakh on his right arm, which was missing when the body was brought home.

“I have seen the CCTV footage from the bank, which shows the kara on his arm. It has been removed by someone. Police are silent on it,” he said.

A senior official said they were looking for the piece of jewellery.
