Anand Tiwari (26), a final year student of Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), was murdered on May 25 and a morning walker had discovered his body the next day.

Police said the accused has been identified as Rahul Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad.

Tiwari had reportedly got close to Kumar’s ex-girlfriend and the latter did not like it. Another person involved in the murder is still on the run, police said.

The girl in question was a classmate of Tiwari and the two had started dating three months ago. Before that the girl was dating Kumar, police said.

The accused had also completed his MBA from the same college two years ago and knew the girl, his neighbour in Ghaziabad.

“Recently the girl became friends with Tiwari and this fact infuriated Kumar. He then decided to kill Tiwari,” said a senior police officer, who didn’t give his name as he is not authorised to speak to media.

The officer said the immediate trigger was a college trip to Switzerland. The students were to go on a trip to Switzerland on May 26, the day his body was found.

“When the accused came to know that both Tiwari and the girl were going for the same trip he got jealous. He roped in a friend, who is still on the run, and asked Tiwari to come to the forest area in Qutub Institutional Area,” said the officer.

“There the duo consumed alcohol and killed Tiwari by smashing his head with a big stone lying nearby.”

Kumar had become friends with Tiwari through the girl so the victim didn’t suspect anything and accompanied them to the forest for a party.

Tiwari, who is from Kolkata, had come to the city a year ago. He was living with classmate Vijay Garg at a rented LIG (lower income group) apartment in Janata Flats, Katwaria Sarai. His father Rajender Tiwari is a businessman.

Police said they were trying to recover the bloodstained clothes from the accused and would take him into custody for further details.
