“The police had complained to us several times that the seal of many properties had been broken. When we entered the area to inspect such properties, a group of people surrounded us and started beating Malik,” said a senior MCD official.

Delhi Police have registered an FIR in the case. “A case has been registered for obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions,” said AK Ojha, DCP, south-west.

Officials say carrying out sealing and demolition in such a scenario will be difficult. “Why should we put our lives at risk? We are pulled up for not taking action against illegal construction and when we do, we are beaten up,” added the official.

Meanwhile, MCD’s south zone continued its drive against illegal construction in areas such as Hauz Khas, M-block Market, Yusuf Sarai, Westend Marg, Mehrauli and Said-ul-Ajab. It took action against seven properties in the zone.
