The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) impending trifurcation has left its sanitation workers distressed and they are ready to go on strike.

Before Diwali, the civic body had promised to oversee the issue of regularisation of the contractual sanitation workers. Now with trifurcation on the cards, the issue of regularisation has taken a back seat and sanitation workers have threatened to go on strike till the time their demands are met.

The workers have been demanding regularisation of their ranks since the past few years. “Since 1995, nearly all workers from other departments have been regularised but 22,000 of the 53,000 sanitation workers are still not regularised,” said Naveen Vaid, secretary, Akhil Bhartiya Safai Mazdoor Congress.
