The city received 123.4 mm of rainfall during the day, the third highest in the last 10 years and also the highest recorded in four years. And the weatherman says the rain is here to stay, for two more days at least.

So far, highest rainfall in the last decade was recorded in 2009 (126 mm) and 2003 (133.4 mm). The all-time record for the highest rainfall in a day was set in July 1958 when 266.2 mm of rain fell in a day.

The rainfall, which is the highest of the season so far, started at around 11.30 am and lasted till late evening.

According to the weatherman, the heavy rainfall was due to moisture-laden wind circulation from northwest Madhya Pradesh and western Uttar Pradesh.

“The presence of two well-marked cyclonic circulations over Punjab and Madhya Pradesh also gave rise to plenty of moisture and pushed it continuously to Delhi all through the day from both northwest and southeast directions,” said a senior met official.

According to the forecast issued by the met department, the rain is expected to last two more days. It will, however, not be as heavy as it was on Saturday. For those who did not get caught in a traffic jam, Saturday was a pleasant day.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 31.1 degree Celsius, three degrees below normal. The minimum was recorded at 23 degrees, four degrees below normal.
