Metro connects with Ring rail passengers

With the expansion of Delhi Metro in Phase 3, the Capital's 30-year-old forgotten Ring Railway service — part of Delhi suburban railway — is likely to get a boost.

After the completion of Metro expansion in 2016, a total of 14 stations of Ring Railway will have a Metro station in their vicinities.

The 34-km Ring Railway has a total of 20 railway stations and at present nine stations are connected to Metro stations.

In Metro's Phase 3, five important Metro stations will come up within a close range of the Ring Railway which is expected to boost connectivity as well as utility of the railway network in a major way, said a spokesperson of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). All these new stations would be on the Mukundpur- Shiv Vihar corridor.

Besides, Delhi Metro would expand two of its metro stations — Lajpat Nagar metro station (near Lajpat Nagar Ring Railway station) and INA metro station (near Lodhi Colony) — and transform them into major interchange stations. The Sarai Kale Khan Metro station will also have a dedicated entry/exit point for the commuters.

"Metro will undoubtedly bridge the gap to a certain extent and make the service popular. But there is also an urgent need for feeder bus service to connect Ring Railway stations with the respective Metro stations," said Neeraj Sharma, chief PRO of Northern Railway.
